Flounder species belong to a large order of flatfishes in several families. Flatfishes include flounders, halibuts, soles, turbots and more. Because of their unique anatomy—their eyes are positioned on one side of their heads—they lie in ambush on or near the ocean bottom.

Some East Coast and Gulf anglers deliberately target flounder species on sandbar dropoffs and small ledges, but for many, these fish are incidental, though delicious, catches. Flounder will eat small fish such as mud minnows and shrimp and take tipped jigs or other artificials.
